I have the honour to forward for your in-

-formation the enclosed copy of a letter from His Britannic

Majesty's Vice-Consul at Canton dated the 14th. May respecting the

proposed Canton-Macao Railway.

I may add that enquiry at the Canton Office of the proposed Railway elicited the statement that the line is now being re-surveyed: that this final survey will be completed in one

month's time and that the construction is expected to take three years. The date of starting construction is not yet fixed, but it is stated that $3,000,000 have been promised in subscriptions. One Japanese and three Chinese Engineers have been engaged on the

recommendation of the Canton-liankow Railway Office.

The Mr. Richards alluded to in para raph 3 of

the Vice-Consul's letter was formerly employed on the British Section of the Kowloon-Canton Railway. He informed Mr. F. Grove on the 17th. Hay that it was a fact that he had accepted an appoint- -ment as District Engineer on the Canton-Macao line.
